Gene Glassburn was born, raised and has lived in the community most of his life. His family is 5th generation, living on the same property that the family homestead back around 1880. He built the second house to be actually built in place on this property. They have had cattle and vegetables on this property, some for consumption and some for sale. He has went to the Dry Prairie Baptist Church for many years, in which his family was one the founding fathers and was raised in the church by a lot of great people from the community. That is why it is great to partner with them on multiple events throughout the year. He served as a 4-H leader, supporter, and advisor for many years, as he also grew up in the program, and contributes a lot of my success to this program as it has taught him to be a better public speaker and put in contact with many people that I still depend on today. He served as Duette Fire Commissioner for 13 years, as it was started by the Mighty 4-Hers of Duette club. It was a great honor to see the department grow to where it is today, from a small volunteer type station with one old truck and a pole barn station, to a full blown fire station that is still mainly volunteer supported. He has also served on the Manatee County 4-H Foundation, the Agricultral Museum Board, Friends of Extension Board, and is presently a Director on the Manatee River Fair Board. He attended Duette Elementary school in the seventies when Mrs. Bilbrey was the teacher and we had the number one cook, Mrs Mildred Parrish. At the time there was about 20 students. If you stop by today it looks a lot like it did back then, except where the butterfly plants are now, that was the gardening area in which we spent at least an hour a day tending to. He graduated from Palmetto High School with the great class of 1982.

Her husband Lawton is a 4thgeneration Carlton to live in Duette and is son to Charles and Janice Carlton. Charles and Lawton both attended primary school at Duette Elementary. The Carlton family in Duette began with Parley Lawton Carlton which was Lawton’s Great Grandfather. Parley owned thousands of acres in Duette. The story goes the land was purchased for $0.10 - $1.00/acre. They raised cattle and orange groves on the land. Upon his death that land was split between his eight children. Then over the years that land has been either passed down or sold. Shawntel has great love and respect for this community and its people and is happy to be a part of this association to continue to better the community for everyone including her family.
